Local Space Lines: Bringing the Stars Into Your Everyday World

When most people think of locational astrology, their mind goes straight to Astrocartography — those sweeping planetary lines arcing across a world map. But there's another powerful technique that works much closer to home: local space astrology, also known as compass astrology.

This is one of my favorite topics to teach because you don't need to book a flight to feel it. You can work with it right where you are, right now.

What Are Local Space Lines?

Local space astrology is technically a separate locational astrology technique from astrocartography, though the two are often confused. This technique was developed by astrologer Michael Erlewine, who mapped out the azimuth — the compass direction of each planet at the exact moment of your birth.

Think of it this way: if you were standing at your birthplace the moment you arrived earthside, each planet would be positioned in a specific compass direction from you. Local space lines project those directions outward across the Earth like beams or spokes on a wheel, with your body as the compass.

Because these lines are directional rather than fixed to a single spot on the map, they move with you. If you weren't born in your current city, you can relocate your local space chart to wherever you live now, and the lines will recalculate to show the compass direction of each planet from your current position. This is what makes local space astrology so immediately useful because you can work with it right in your hometown, no relocation required.

One important distinction: local space lines are not a part of astrocartography. They are a separate technique. However, you can absolutely layer them on top of your astrocartography map for a richer, more complete picture of what's going on for you in any given location (most astrocartographers add this technique into their readings).

How Local Space Lines Work

At its core, local space astrology is about projecting the planetary energies of your natal chart out into your environment. These lines radiate outward from you like a personal energy map, and you can physically travel along a line's direction to activate that planet's energy in your life.

The planetary themes are the same ones you already know from astrocartography — Mercury rules communication, writing, and networking; Venus covers beauty, connection, and desire; Jupiter brings opportunity, expansion, and abundance; Saturn governs responsibility, structure, and long-term building; and so on through every planet in your chart.

Personally, I love working along my Mercury local space line within my local area. Whenever I want to write blog posts, plan content, or tap into my networking energy, I'll head to coffee shops in that compass direction from my home. The boost in communication, focus, and creative flow is real. It's similar to the Mercury energy we see in astrocartography just experienced locally. Both are based on how the coonditions of my Mercury placement in my chart.

Active Feedback & Remediation

Here's where local space astrology gets truly empowering. These lines aren't passive markers, they provide active feedback and remediation for the energies of your natal chart and current transits.

If you're experiencing challenges connected to a specific planet (feeling stuck, blocked, or like a certain area of life just isn't flowing) your local space lines give you a tangible place to start. You can clear the corresponding space in your environment, enhance it intentionally, and watch how the associated life situation begins to shift.

Here's a real example: Say your Jupiter line crosses through a specific corner of your room, and that corner is piled with old boxes, clutter, and things you no longer use. If your finances feel stuck or abundance just isn't flowing, take a look at that space. Clear it out. Bring in something that feels expansive like a plant, something gold or green, a symbol of growth. Then notice what shifts in your money story.

This is the remediation aspect of local space: by consciously working with the physical space your lines occupy, you're directly engaging with and recalibrating that planetary energy in your life.

Understanding Conjunctions in Local Space

Just like in natal astrology, conjunctions in local space carry layered meaning — and they show up in two important ways.

The first is planetary line conjunctions. If two local space lines are running in nearly the same direction (within 5 degrees or less of each other) those planetary energies are working in tandem. Read them as a combined influence rather than separately. A Venus and Jupiter line running almost parallel, for example, would blend themes of beauty, connection, abundance, and expansion all flowing in the same direction.

The second is object conjunctions and this is one of the more enchanting dimensions of local space work. A conjunction can also mean that your line passes directly through a specific object in your environment, and the nature of that object carries its own planetary signature. Flowers sitting in the path of a line bring Venusian energy — softness, beauty, receptivity. A vanity mirror is similarly Venusian. Colors and shapes carry planetary correlations too, so take note of what physically exists along your lines.

You can also use this intentionally. Placing objects that align with the energy you want to strengthen along a given line can serve as an energetic anchor for that intention. What you choose to hold in that space matters.

How to Find Your Local Space Lines

Local space lines can be layered onto your astrocartography map on most platforms. On Astro.com, you can see your Local Space map by going to the AstroClick Local Space section of the site. Professional astrological software will also have this feature, with the added benefit of being able to relocate your chart to your current city for a more localized view.

In terms of range, local space lines carry an influence of approximately 200 miles, or a 3-degree orb astrologically. You'll feel them most strongly within your metro area or city, though they do extend outward from there.

One practical note: local space astrology is a tool, not a guarantee. If your Venus line happens to run through an area that doesn't feel safe or aligned, please don't override your discernment. Use these lines as one layer of guidance alongside your common sense.

The Cosmos Is Closer Than You Think

What I love most about local space astrology is its immediacy. You don't need to uproot your life or wonder what it would feel like to live somewhere else. The planetary energy of your chart is already radiating outward from wherever you're standing.

I once worked with a client who had been living on his Saturn MC line in LA for years. He wanted to change neighborhoods but didn't want to leave the city entirely. We used his local space lines to find a part of the city that carried more supportive energy and that's exactly where he landed. It's a perfect example of how astrocartography and local space work beautifully together. Astrocartography paints the big picture; local space helps you move wisely within it.

The cosmos is closer than you think. And your chart is already showing you the way.
